The Importance of Protein to Fitness and General Health

Benefit of Protein to Fitness Proteins are biomolecules that contain amino acids and are useful for various bodily functions. They are crucial in the maintenance as well as the production of new cells, they help in maintaining and losing weight, they stabilize the blood sugar levels, increase focus, boost your energy levels and support your muscles and bones.

Not all proteins are the same. Two large categories of proteins are distinguished: complete and incomplete proteins.

There are nine essential amino acids and complete proteins have them all.  Examples of foods that contain such proteins are meats, fish, eggs and dairy, chia, buckwheat and quinoa.

Incomplete proteins don’t have all nine amino acids and they must be combined with other proteins to supply the body with everything it needs. These proteins can be found in nuts, seeds, and vegetables. This doesn’t mean that these foods are good enough, just that they have to be mixed together to benefit the human body as much as possible.

Many people associate protein with fitness and while it is true that anyone who exercises regularly or has any type of increased physical activity should eat more protein, the amino acids are essential to any person to allow their body to work properly.

Even though lately people have become more and more focused on protein and it’s true it is crucial to the human body, the truth is that the average person already eats enough foods that contain protein on a regular basis without needing additional protein bars.

The benefits of protein

Some of the benefits proteins have in the human body are as follow:

  • Protein creates an anabolic hormonal environment. In lamest terms, it helps muscle building and fat loss. This is the main reason why proteins are so popular today, especially among bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts.

During exercise, the muscles often stretch and tear. Protein is needed to repair and strengthen the damaged muscles and that also increases the total muscle mass.

  • Protein reduces appetite – and it does that by boosting the satiety hormone peptide YY. This makes protein a great help in weight loss.
  • Protein increases bone strength. Studies have shown that people who eat more protein will maintain their bone mass better.
  • Protein can boost metabolism. An increase in protein intake can make you burn 80 to 100 more calories each day.
  • Protein can lower the blood pressure, LDL and triglycerides. In the studies, increased protein intake lowered the systolic blood pressure on average by 1.76 mmHg and the diastolic blood pressure by 1.15 mmHg.
  • Protein can help treat type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease that’s caused by high blood sugar and the body’s inability to produce insulin. Studies have shown that protein can be an effective tool in moderating blood sugar.
  • Protein improves the nervous system.  The nervous system becomes active when it’s triggered and responds accordingly. The receptors in the nervous system comprise of protein complexes that assist in the transmission of signals within the cells.

Many other benefits of the proteins should be mentioned: stronger immune system, balanced hormones, hair care, and even skin care.

These and more responsible for many fitness and health conscious to supplement with proteins based drinks like the vega one protein source that has been taking the market with storm. Does it really works as advertised?

How much is enough?

It is recommended for adults to take between 12% and 30% of their total caloric intake from protein sources. Each person should take 0.8 grams of the protein per kilogram per day for general health, according to the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics. People who are very active will require more.

But how much is 0.8 grams of protein and how can you know how much protein is in each food?

Here’s a list that will get you started:

  • A cup of milk has 8 grams
  • An egg has 6 grams
  • A scoop of whey protein has 24 grams
  • A 3-ounce piece of meat has 21 grams
  • An 8-ounce container of Greek yogurt has 23 grams
  • A cup of quinoa has 8 grams
  • A 3 ounce serving of tuna has 25 grams

To sum up when you’re choosing foods based on their protein content you must always remember that while some contain complete proteins others have to be combined in order to have the same benefit effects on the human body.

The countless benefits protein has on the human body should convince any person to eat healthier foods that, combined together, give the body all it needs to regenerate and function properly. Sometimes like the 3 day military diet substitutions should do

Surgical Oncology – Thousands Now Live Longer

medical oncologyYou might not be feeling well or you have noticed some growths on your body that are making you nervous. What kind of doctor do you need to find to get the proper diagnoses and treatment options needed to continue living a healthy long life?

Most hospitals have a division of surgical oncology that deals specifically with both the management and treatment of tumors. You need to understand that not all tumors are cancerous, but nonetheless, you need expert advise in treating any condition that involves abnormal growths.

When you go to such a division, an experienced physician can determine the status of your condition and form a treatment plan that would be best for you. It’s important to know that just because you go to a surgeon; it doesn’t mean that surgery is the only option.

Your physician will always start with the least invasive treatment options before considering more serious procedures. The doctor’s in the division of surgical oncology are very experienced in all phases of treatment and will do what’s needed to keep you healthy.

What experience do doctors in the division of surgical oncology need to have?

The simple answer is many years of intense education and training plus hours of practical experience. After 4 years of medical school and then a 2 to 4 year residency program, a prospective surgeon must then enter into an accredited fellowship program approved by the Society of Surgical Oncology.

After the fellowship has been successfully completed, he or she must complete a difficult board exam to be labeled as a board certified surgical oncologist.

It’s only after all of this that a surgeon has the opportunity to join a team in a reputable hospital’s division of surgical oncology. Only the cream of the crop is chosen, so you know you are receiving the best surgeon to manage and successfully treat your condition.

What to look for in a quality division of surgical oncology?

It’s good to look for a program that is accredited by the many surgical associations in the state it resides. Recognition is usually given for treatment excellence. A surgical oncology program is usually well connected with a vast hospital system and fully integrated with other complementary programs staffed by experts in the management and treatment of cancer.

Are the facilities up to your high expectations?

There’s more to treatment than just surgery. From the exam, tests, diagnoses, treatment plan and follow-up care, you need a surgical oncologist that can allow you the best doctors, support staff, facilities and programs to successfully treat your condition. You and your doctor want only the very best outcome and all these pieces need to be in place to provide that opportunity.

What’s the Use of Surgery?

Surgery is the oldest form of cancer treatment, and for many patients, portion of this curative plan comprises operation. The most significant part the consultation with the surgeon would be an entire history and physical examination.

Before surgical resection, diagnostic and staging studies must be carried out. This also enables the surgeon to determine whether the cancer is resectable (removable with surgery), also enables them to plan the surgical approach.

Because of advanced screening techniques, many patients have a disease that’s curable with surgery alone at diagnosis. In these situations, after surgery, the patient’s follow-up maintenance consists of close observation and/or radiology and lab tests.

The surgical oncologist would aim to take out cancer along with an area of healthy tissue surrounding it, also called a clear margin or clear excision, to stop the disease from recurring in that region (which can be called a local recurrence).

At times it isn’t feasible to remove an entire tumour, and a surgery called “debulking” can be done to eliminate as much of the tumor as possible and also to alleviate symptoms like pain, airway obstruction, or bleeding.

On the other hand, the participation of this surgical oncologist goes past what’s completed on the afternoon of surgery itself.

Included in the multidisciplinary care team, he or she supplies expert opinion regarding biopsy techniques, best image advice, the odds of attaining clear margins (particularly in borderline resectable instances), and also what role there’s, if any, for operative management of more complex disease.

Though chemotherapy and radiation therapy are used either pre- or post-operatively, a first surgery is critical as it isn’t apparent that chemotherapy or radiation may fix or compensate for the small operation. Excision of lymph nodes in the field of the tumor might be done in the time of surgery, based on the kind of cancer.

The advice about lymph node status (i.e. do they contain cancer cells or not?) Will help determine prognosis in addition to additional treatment options.

As an instance, if a patient has a small rectal cancer that’s believed to be node-negative pre-operatively, however, there’s nodal involvement found after surgery, this finding gives a less favorable prognosis than if most of the nodes were negative.

Furthermore, chemotherapy or radiation could be recommended for node-positive disease, but with node-negative illness along with a lack of additional risk factors, monitoring alone after surgery might be recommended.

The kinds of surgeries that are performed for cancers rely on the point and location of the tumor as well as the fitness of the individual for surgery, and will continue to evolve as surgical techniques advance. Your surgeon will discuss with one of the surgery that’s appropriate for your situation and the risks and benefits of the procedure.

A traditional case of the development of surgical procedure is the management of breast cancer. In 1890, Dr William S. Halsted pioneered the radical mastectomy, a surgery that removed the entire breast, all of draining nodes along with the pectoral muscles (the muscle at the chest just beneath the breast).

This is an extreme procedure that led to poor cosmetic outcomes and other long-term troubles. While this was successful against the cancer, other surgeons believed whether they could attain good oncologic results using a less comprehensive and disfiguring surgery.

Breast-conserving surgery was pioneered by Dr. Veronesi in Italy, who conducted quadrantectomy (eliminating a single quadrant of breast tissue) beginning in the 1970s, though it took years of follow-up to demonstrate that this significantly less extensive surgery was acceptable.

These days, breast surgeons tend to perform much smaller and much more cosmetically satisfying surgeries known as lumpectomies (which ought to be followed closely with breast radiation), while still maintaining excellent cancer management.

Furthermore, all girls used to get surgery to remove the lymph nodes from the underarm, called an axillary dissection.

The dissection left some girls with arm swelling, pain, or limited range of motion. Now, for a diagnostic staging of the axilla, sentinel lymph node dissection (removing just the first draining node) is completed. Axillary dissection is reserved for situations in which the sentinel node is positive for tumor, or even when a sentinel node can’t be found.

What about Reconstructive Surgery?

From time to time, after removal of the tumor, there’s a defect left behind this might be physically devastating or influence on function. To cure this, reconstructive methods are increasingly being used for specific cancers and are significant due to the effect on the individual’s wellbeing. Reconstruction can occur at precisely the same period that the tumor has been removed, (“immediate reconstruction”), or months to months afterwards, “delayed reconstruction.”

Every time a surgical oncologist works in combination with a plastic surgeon – for instance, a breast surgeon performing a mastectomy with immediate reconstruction achieved by the plastic surgeon – the combined surgical approach is called “oncoplastic surgery.”

In conclusion, Like radiation therapy, the exact facts of surgical technique are uttered by patient anatomy, tumor location, and cancer cell biology. Thus, there is not always one exact way of doing things. Experience and evidence continue to shape the field of surgical oncology.

Top 5 Trends in the Pharmaceutical Industry 2017

Interested in following the leading trends from experts in the industry? In this guide, you will find some of the market’s top trends and falls that will help you gain further insight into the next trends to come.

Here are the top 5 trends in the pharmaceutical industry 2017.

Dependency on Medtech

Today, more pharmaceutical companies are looking to work alone and go beyond of drug. With technology that helps track patient compliance and monitoring, this helps to give companies a competitive edge without the need for partnerships. In fact, there are more non-traditional deals now than ever as mobile and telecom companies are helping to make pharmaceutical companies move past the basic pill and more into comprehensive medical products that can help diagnose, monitor and more potential applications.

Drug prices continue to rise

As 2016 was all about the conspiracy of drug prices, 2017 will only continue the trend even further. There is a clear message that the annual or quarterly drug price will increase to fuel sales growth even more. With President Trump’s plan to stiffen the challenges, the need of volume growth will continue to increase. This means that pharmaceutical manufacturers must increase their volume of growth to continue sustainable revenue.

Treatment for Alzheimer’s

As the baby boomer generation continues to grow older, the Alzheimer’s disease is assumed to account for as much as 25% of Medicare by 2040. With the increase in spending, more pharmaceutical companies are on the run for an optimal treatment and prevention to the disease. In fact, billions of dollars have already been invested in targeting antibody medication.

According to Forbes, pharma companies and biotech are developing drugs based on the research of bacterial composition in the gut and how it affects the mood. This will not only open up new methods of treating depression and other related mental illnesses but also brain disorders.

Biosimilar Drugs

Currently, biosimilar drugs are presenting an affordable option to the consumer and a potential hit for manufacturing companies. These biological products are also continuing to increase in demand as the drug was approved in the U.S. in 2015.

Today, there is over 700 biosimilar approved to be used by 2020.

Simple Self-Examination to Detect Breast Cancer

Detect Breast Cancer AwarenessIncrease in survival after breast can diagnosis has over several years been attributed to screening mammography.

More than seventy percent of women have reported having undergone mammography screening to detect breast cancer. However, despite the increased use of testing, a large percentage of women have been able to identify breast cancer by themselves.

But should you do a breast self-exam? Medical groups don’t agree on that. You can ask your doctor for advice on whether it would be helpful for you.

What Is A Breast Self-Exam?

Breast self-exam is a way breast for symptoms that are highly associated with breast cancer. These may include things such as lumps and thickening of the breast or even discharge of fluids through the nipples.

If you notice something unusual on your breast, it is essential that you notify your doctor though in most cases those signs may not necessarily predict the existence of cancer

How Do I Do A Breast Self-Exam?

If you choose to do a self-test on your breast to look for pre-cancerous lesions, here are the simple steps to follow:

Perform a visual exam in the mirror.

  • One way to look for problems with your breasts is to look for variations in their appearance. Stand before your mirror undressed. Place your hands on your hips. Press confidently down on your hips to engage the muscles, which will help you notice changes. Take note of any redness or scaling of the skin and nipples, any changes to the size, contour, or shape, and any dimpling or puckering to the area.
  • Check your nipples for discharge fluid. Place your thumb and forefinger on the tissue surrounding the nipple and pull outward toward the end of the nipple. Look for any discharge. Repeat on your other breast.
  • Check your nipples and look for any sores, peeling, or change in their direction.

Lying Down:

  • Lie down on your bed or couch with your right arm lifted above your head. Using your left hand, feel around your right breast. Start under your right armpit and press down gently. This will aid feeling the first stratum of tissue beneath your breast.
  • Make small circles using your three middle fingers. Use the pads of your fingers and not your fingertips.
  • Move your finger circles up and down around the breast tissue, use some kind of pattern you make while mowing a lawn until you cover the whole breast and underarm area.
  • Place your fingers flat and directly on top of your nipple. Feel below the nipples for any changes. Press your nipples inwards in a gentle manner. It should move easily.
  • Repeat the above steps on your other breast. Don’t forget to check the upper, outer area of the chest, nearest to the armpit.

Contact Your Doctor.

After performing the above tests, it’s essential that you contact your doctor when you notice the following:

  • Part of your breast area is different from any other area on either breast.
  • A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm that lasts through your menstrual cycle.
  • A change in the size or shape of the breast.
  • A marble-like area under the skin.
  • Difference in the appearance of the skin on the breast or nipple (dimpled, puckered, scaly, or inflamed)
  • If you notice blood or clear fluids discharged from your nipples.

Idenix Puts IDX184 On Hold, FDA to Conduct Further Review

LITTLE ROCK, AR– Idenix Pharmaceuticals, a global biopharmaceutical company that works for the discovery and improvement of medications for human viral diseases treatment, announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has placed a partial clinical hold on IDX184, the nucleotide polymerase inhibitor that is being developed by Idenix for the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV).

According to the FDA, it has to further review the safety of IDX184, which is why it has been put on hold.

This was because of a recent severe cardiac-related effect observed on the nucleotide polymerase inhibitor for HCV treatment developed by a competitor. The FDA has asked the Company for more data regarding patients who have received IDX184 treatment.

In the ongoing clinical trial of IDX184, combined with ribavirin and pegylated interferon, no evidence of cardiotoxicity has been found yet in patients who were given IDX184 with ribavirin other than what is observed with ribavirin alone.

Also called tribavirin, ribavirin is an anti-viral drug used for hepatitis C, RSV infection, and viral hemorrhagic fever treatment. To date, no patient has received IDX184 alone worldwide.

Idenix assures the safety of every patient and is committed to complying with the FDA’s requests. Continuous discussions with the FDA representatives will be pushed after submitting the data requested by the FDA.

About Idenix

Headquartered in Little Rock, Arkansas, Idenix Pharmaceuticals is a global biopharmaceutical company for the discovery and development of medications for human viral diseases treatment.

For nearly 20 years, the company has invested in research and development as well as innovative technologies to come up with pharmaceutical solutions that work. Currently, the company focuses on the treatment of hepatitis C infection patients. For more information about Idenix, please visit www.idenix.com.

About IDX184

IDX184 is a new nucleotide prodrug of 2′-methyl guanosine that targets the liver to treat patients with hepatitis C virus.

It includes Idenix’s proprietary liver-targeting technology that provides the supply of nucleoside monophosphate to the liver, which forms nucleoside triphosphate in high levels. This can maximize drug efficacy and restrict systemic side effects as low as the dosage is low and given once daily.

In the ongoing clinical trial of IDX184 combined with ribavirin, 100% of 31 patients in the 100mg arm who completed a month’s worth of ribavirin treatment and achieved a prolonged virologic response were able to show a sustained virologic response a month after the treatment.

A third-party data corroborates with Idenix’s findings. A safety monitoring board evaluated the safety figures for this study. The board confirmed that the side effects associated with the combination of IDX184 and ribavirin are the same as that of ribavirin alone.

About the partial clinical hold

A partial clinical hold refers to the temporary delay of only a portion of the clinical work under the new drug application. Under this FDA directive, a specific protocol is not allowed to proceed.

But other protocols can be performed. This means that Idenix is not allowed by the FDA to enroll patients into supplementary clinical trials until the FDA agrees on the next clinical trial design.

Hepatitis C Treatment for Drug Abusers

Today, one of the most common life-threatening viruses in the world is Hepatitis C. As a potential killer, the deadly virus has the power to damage an individual’s liver function. The liver plays a vital role in how it filters toxins out of the body. However, someone who has hepatitis C and abuses drugs puts their health in grave risk of danger.

What is Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis means the inflammation of the liver. The true form of the virus will spread once the virus becomes active. As hepatitis C enters the body, the virus will enter through the bloodstream and travel to the liver.During the first stage, the hepatitis virus will live inside the liver and thrive.

How is Hepatitis C Transmitted?

According to research at the San Diego State University Foundation, there are an estimated number of 4 million people in the U.S. exposed to the virus.

This virus can be contracted when someone drinks or eats something that is contaminated by the blood or tool of someone who is infected by the virus. However Hepatitis A does not develop into a serious condition as it would with the B and C virus.

If you use a syringe to inject drugs such as cocaine, LSD, or heroine, it only takes one event to contract the virus. This means anyone who experiments with an infected syringe can be exposed to the virus.

In fact, over 60% of hepatitis C cases were a result of injection drug use. The infection occurs within the first year of the injection for more than half of hepatitis C cases. This is partly due to how the equipment is used as large groups share the drug solution with one set of equipment. As a result, the transmission quickly spreads from one person to another.

Treatments to Consider

More treatments include replacing injections with pills and reducing the side effects in treatment in as little as eight weeks. However, the treatment must be used with a set of combination of ribavirin and interferon to help control the virus and stabilize the spread through the liver.

As a result, more companies like Idenix are using a lead method of treatment called IDX21437 is noted as one of the most potential drugs for treating hepatitis C.

Antiviral medications are prescribed when the virus is rapidly growing in the body. During the case if a patient consumes large amount of alcohol, a physician may prevent the patient from receiving treatment. This is due to the anti-effect of the medication that the alcohol cancels out.

Just as with any virus, hepatitis can stay in the body for years before it can be determined and affect the functions of the liver. If you have used syringe injections in the past and find yourself suffering from flu-like symptoms, be sure to consult with your physician and discuss the potential of the hepatitis C virus.
